Biography

Dr. Kan is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong Medical School and is at present the Louis K. Diamond Professor of Hematology at the University of California, San Francisco. He has served on many organisations including as the President of the American Society of Hematology (1990), the immediate past Chairman of the Croucher Foundation in Hong Kong (1997-2011), which supports science and technology in Hong Kong, and Scientific Advisor and member of the Executive Committee of the Qiu Shi Foundation of Science and Technology, which supports science education and research in China. He works in the fields of hematology and genetics and his research led to the innovation of DNA diagnosis and DNA polymorphism that have found wide applications in many human conditions. In recognition of his contributions, he has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Fellow of the Royal Society (UK) and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has received many national awards including the Lasker Award for Medical Research, international awards from Canada, Italy and Switzerland, and the Shaw Prize in Life Sciences and Medicine from Hong Kong.
