Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Remineralises Tooth Surface of Dental Caries

Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Remineralises Tooth Surface of Dental Caries

A stable, dual activity peptide that prevents microbe adhesion and regenerates tooth surface mineralisation

Field
Medical Devices
Reference No.
IP00903

Background

  • Dental caries: a leading public health problem worldwide
  • 2.5 billion people have untreated caries which may lead to serious infection, loss of teeth, or even serious systemic health issue
  • Micro-organisms accumulate on tooth surfaces easily producing local acidic environment which causes softening of teeth
  • Preventing micro-organisms adhesion and restoring the decayed tooth surfaces are very important for dental hygiene

Technology Overview

  • The modified peptide has DUAL BIOACTIVE properties:
    • prevent adhesion of micro-organisms on tooth surface
    • regenerate mineralized surface on decayed tooth with protection from demineralization of tooth surface
  • The peptide can be totally synthetic and relatively stable with low toxicity
  • Its production is relatively easy to control

Figure 3: Promotes mineralization of enamel surface1

Applications

  • Additive to dental hygiene products such as toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Stand alone protective gel with daily multiple applications
