Abstract:
The demand of higher efficiency of technology commercialization is getting higher importance and traditional innovation system revealed its limitations as the life cycle of product is getting shorter and shorter. The presenter will share (1) current challenges of technology commercialization in academia; (2) innovating of innovation system; and (3) case studies in ETPL A*STAR. He will also highlight the key elements of successful technology commercialization. 

About the Speaker:
Dr. KIM Shin Cheul is a senior vice president in Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), a commercialization arm of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and a cluster head for Materials and Electronics. He’s key role is to manage IP portfolios, identify the potential technologies, incubate them through collaboration and Gap funding project, and commercialize them. He has supervised more than 25 commercialization projects and involved in establishing 12 startups mainly in materials and electronics industries including their biomedical applications.

He was a founding member of NESS Display Co Ltd (2000) in Korea which commercialized OLED display in 2002 and has secured more than US$100 million investment for OLED production. He invented the linear evaporation source for organic materials, led the team to develop OLED production tool, and established two OLED production lines in Korea and Singapore. He has strong operation experience and worked as Production manager in NESS Display Co Ltd. (2002) and Operation director (2004), and Manufacturing managing director (2005) in NESS Display Singapore Pte Ltd. 

He is a member of review committee for various grants including SPRING Singapore’s Technology Enterprise Commercialization Scheme (TECS). He also served as a board member of Tera Barrier Film Pte Ltd, a member of materials research society of Singapore and national advisory board of International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies.

He received the Ph.D from the Institute for physics and applied physics in Yonsei University in Korea and was a lecturer in several universities. He published more than 20 journal and conference papers and filed 15 patent applications.
